State Fair Project

Learning the Geography of North America

During the 2025–26 school year, fifth grade students in Rockbridge County expanded their U.S. History and Geography studies by researching individual states and presenting their findings to peers. The project emphasized locating all fifty states on a map, understanding how geographic features and bodies of water shape daily life, and developing critical research skills such as evaluating source credibility, comparing media messages, and gathering information from multiple sources. Grant funds supported the purchase of presentation boards, markers, postage for correspondence with State Tourism Departments, art supplies, and printing materials. On November 24, 2025, students gathered at Maury River Middle School to organize projects by state, compare and contrast findings, and participate in a gallery-style, scavenger-hunt exploration of their peers’ work, after which students returned to their schools to vote for their favorite projects.

Kind Words

“Do we really get to meet people that we will be in classes with next year?”

Students were excited to meet new people and share their ideas from the presentations. This opportunity provided students the opportunity to connect with other 5th graders that they will be in classes with next year in 6th grade.
